Assets of America: Student Co-Ops

Assets of America: Student Co-Ops .

Student co-ops have gained popularity in the U.S. and Canada because they provide low cost housing with a friendly ambiance. Students living in co-ops usually do not have to deal with private off-campus landlords or the university administration, so they are able to care for their residences as a team. The shared decision-making and work make for an atmosphere that is more social than an apartment and more personal than a residence hall.

The University of Michigan witnessed a steady growth of student co-ops since the Great Depression leading to the birth of the North American Students of Cooperation (NASCO) in 1968. Student co-ops provide valuable housing choice and a positive mature lifestyle for college students, and with co-ops being organized nationwide are now available to more students than ever.
