NADER TO HOLD NEWS CONFERENCE AND RALLY IN EUGENE, OR

WHO: Ralph Nader

WHAT: Press Conference and Rally

WHEN: Monday, Oct. 20, at 2:45, and 3 p.m., respectively

WHERE: McDonald Theatre, 1010 Willamette Street, Eugene, OR 97402

On Monday, October 20 at 2:45 p.m., consumer advocate and presidential candidate Ralph Nader will hold a press conference at the McDonald Theatre, 1010 Willamette Street, Eugene, OR, followed by a 3 p.m. rally. Mr. Nader will speak on a variety of topics including the economic crisis, the fraudulent Commission on Presidential Debates which excludes alternative voices from participating, and other pressing issues especially pertinent to Oregon residents.

The Nader/Gonzalez campaign commends green initiatives sprouting in Eugene like the new, environmentally conscious Toyota dealership. Costing about $13 million dollars, the dealership says it sometimes generates more electricity than it consumes through sophisticated solar panels built on the roof, enabling the resale of excess electricity back to the utility company. In addition to the solar panels, the facility accommodates a rainwater collection and reuse system that carries the potential to provide enough water to run the dealership’s car-wash and irrigation systems. This is done through two 10,000-gallon tanks made of recycled steel that capture about 60 percent of rainwater falling on the roof. And just across the river from the dealership at the University of Oregon, students are taking advantage of a brand new bike-loan program recently launched by the university’s outdoor program. By converting old, unused bicycles into a fleet of rentals, students are able to avoid dirty, expensive gasoline to fuel their way around town and campus while rewarding themselves with a healthy, alternative mode for transport. The bike-loan program, which is sure to inspire other cities to follow suit, is the only one of its kind in all of Oregon, including Portland which is widely considered the most bicycle friendly city in North America and which recently topped a list of the Greenest Cities in the world by Popular Science Magazine.

Mr. Nader will also address other critical issues the major party candidates have taken "off the table" that the Nader/Gonzalez Campaign has put on the table, including:

- a comprehensive, six-month negotiated military and corporate withdrawal date from Iraq;
- a single-payer, private delivery, free-choice public health insurance system for all;
- a living wage and repeal of the anti-union Taft-Hartley Act;
- a no-nuke, solar-based energy policy supported by renewable, sustainable, energy-efficient sources;
- a carbon tax to deter global warming and a securities derivatives tax to pay for the Washington bailout of Wall Street;
- an end to the corporate welfare and corporate crime that has resulted in millions losing pensions, savings and jobs and squandered tax dollars; and,
- more direct democracy reflecting the preamble to our constitution which starts with "we the people," and not "we the corporations."
